WAEC Denies Issuing Any Directive on Subjects for 2026 WASSCE, Warns Against Fake Reports

The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has dismissed widespread media reports claiming that the body instructed schools to restrict senior secondary school students to certain subjects for the 2026 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE).

In a press release issued on Tuesday, October 28, 2025, WAEC described the claims as false, noting that the Council does not issue directives on senior secondary school curricula or force schools to offer or drop particular subjects.

According to the Council, the regulation and development of school curricula in Nigeria fall strictly under the jurisdiction of the Federal Government, not WAEC. The examination body stated that its role is limited to assessing students based on the curricula provided by the government.

WAEC further stressed that it does not arbitrarily implement changes to the curriculum. Any modification to subjects or structure, it said, would be based on proper government-approved processes before being reflected in examinations.

The Council urged schools, education stakeholders and the general public to disregard misleading publications and rely only on official communication from WAEC for authentic updates regarding the 2026 WASSCE.

WAEC also assured candidates that all students participating in the 2026 WASSCE for School Candidates will be given a fair and equal opportunity during assessment, adding that no candidate will be disadvantaged due to misinformation.
