The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has discharged 933 corps members of the 2025 Batch ‘B’ Stream I in Anambra State after successfully completing the mandatory one-year national service, while nine others have been directed to repeat the service year for absconding from service.

The announcement was made during the Passing-Out Ceremony held simultaneously across the state’s 21 Local Government Areas, marking the end of the service year for the outgoing corps members.

Speaking during the ceremony at the NYSC Secretariat in Ihiala, the Anambra State Coordinator, Mrs. Pauline Ojisua, said the nine corps members would repeat the service year in line with the provisions of the NYSC Bye-Laws after they were found to have absconded during their national service.

She also disclosed that two corps members had their service year extended over disciplinary issues, stressing that the scheme would continue to enforce its regulations to preserve discipline and accountability among participants.

According to Ojisua, adherence to the NYSC Bye-Laws remains a key requirement for every corps member, adding that sanctions are applied where necessary to protect the integrity of the programme.

Despite the disciplinary measures against some participants, the coordinator announced that five corps members were retained by their employers in recognition of their dedication, professionalism and outstanding performance during the service year.

She described the development as evidence that commitment, diligence and excellence continue to create employment opportunities for young graduates beyond the NYSC programme.

The retained corps members served in different organisations across the state and distinguished themselves through hard work and commitment to duty.

Congratulating the 933 graduates who successfully completed their service, Ojisua urged them to apply the knowledge, leadership qualities and practical skills gained during the programme as they move into the next stage of their careers.

She encouraged them to embrace entrepreneurship and self-reliance, noting that the NYSC’s Skills Acquisition and Entrepreneurship Development (SAED) initiative was designed to prepare young Nigerians for employment and business opportunities after national service.

The coordinator also advised the outgoing corps members to remain good ambassadors of the scheme by demonstrating integrity, patriotism and commitment to national development wherever they find themselves.

Established in 1973, the National Youth Service Corps was created to foster national unity by deploying graduates to states outside their regions of origin while encouraging cultural integration and community development.

Throughout the one-year programme, corps members serve in public and private institutions while participating in Community Development Service (CDS) projects aimed at addressing social and economic challenges in their host communities.

The Passing-Out Ceremony officially marks the completion of the programme and qualifies participants to receive their Certificate of National Service (CNS), a key requirement for many employment opportunities in Nigeria.

While the successful discharge of 933 corps members represents another milestone for the NYSC in Anambra State, the decision requiring nine participants to repeat their service year serves as a reminder of the importance of discipline and compliance with the scheme’s regulations.

At the same time, the retention of five corps members by their employers highlights the opportunities available to graduates who demonstrate dedication and professionalism throughout their national service.

As the discharged corps members begin the next chapter of their lives, the experiences, skills and relationships built during the programme are expected to serve as valuable assets in their careers and future contributions to national development.
