Scored Low in JAMB? Here's How to Still Gain University Admission in Nigeria (2025)

For many Nigerian students, the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) exam is a major hurdle on the road to higher education. Every year, thousands of students write the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME), hoping to score high and gain admission into the university of their dreams. But what happens when your JAMB score is low?

If you scored low in JAMB, don’t panic. Scoring below the cutoff mark isn’t the end of your academic journey. There are many paths to gaining university admission in Nigeria, even with a low JAMB score. This article breaks down all the practical options available to you in 2025, how to make the most of them, and what steps to take next.

JAMB Scores and University Admission

First, let’s define what a low JAMB score means. In most cases, a score below 180 is considered low, especially for competitive courses like Medicine, Law, and Engineering. However, many universities and other tertiary institutions in Nigeria accept scores lower than this, depending on the course and institution.

The JAMB score is only one part of the admission process. Other components include:

  • O’Level results (WAEC/NECO/NABTEB)
  • Post-UTME screening
  • Catchment area and educationally less-developed states (ELDS) considerations

Now let’s explore your options that are available to you.

1. Apply to Private Universities

Private universities in Nigeria often have more flexible admission requirements. Some of them accept JAMB scores as low as 120 or 140. If you can afford the tuition fees, this is a good route to consider. Many private universities also offer scholarships or payment plans to help students manage costs.

Examples of private universities that accept low JAMB scores:

  • Lead City University, Ibadan
  • Igbinedion University, Okada
  • Gregory University, Uturu
  • Achievers University, Owo
  • Oduduwa University, Ipetumodu

Make sure to research the specific requirements of each institution before applying.

2. Consider Less Competitive Courses

Courses like Medicine, Law, and Engineering are highly competitive and require very high JAMB scores. However, other courses like Sociology, Linguistics, Education, or Agriculture might have lower cutoff marks.

If your dream is to enter a particular field, you can:

  • Apply for a related but less competitive course
  • Gain admission and then apply for a course change later

For example, you might gain admission to study Biological Sciences with a plan to later transfer to Medicine if your GPA and departmental requirements allow.

3. Choose State Universities and Polytechnics

Many state universities and polytechnics have lower JAMB cutoff marks compared to federal universities. Some accept scores as low as 140 or 150.

Examples include:

  • Lagos State University (LASU)
  • Ekiti State University (EKSU)
  • Rufus Giwa Polytechnic
  • The Polytechnic Ibadan
  • Kwara State Polytechnic

These schools often give preference to candidates from within the state, so indigenes may have an advantage.

4. Explore Pre-degree, JUPEB, and Remedial Programmes

Pre-degree programmes allow you to prepare for university admission over one academic year. These programmes are offered by many federal and state universities. After successfully completing the programme and passing the final exams, you can gain admission into 100 or 200 level without needing to rewrite JAMB.

JUPEB (Joint Universities Preliminary Examinations Board) is a popular A-level programme in Nigeria. It enables students to gain direct entry into 200 level in participating universities.

Some schools offering JUPEB and pre-degree include:

  • University of Lagos (UNILAG)
  • Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU)
  • University of Ilorin (UNILORIN)
  • University of Benin (UNIBEN)

While these programmes may cost more than regular JAMB admission, they provide a second chance.

5. Go Through IJMB (Interim Joint Matriculation Board)

The IJMB programme is similar to JUPEB. It’s a one-year advanced level programme approved by the Federal Government and coordinated by Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria. After completing IJMB, you can apply for Direct Entry admission into 200 level in many universities.

Benefits of IJMB:

  • No need to write JAMB
  • Valid for admission in over 70 Nigerian universities
  • Affordable fees (compared to private universities)

Ensure you register with an accredited IJMB center to avoid scams.

6. Consider National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN)

NOUN is an open and distance learning institution, which does not require JAMB for admission. It offers a wide range of undergraduate and postgraduate courses.

Advantages:

  • Flexible study schedule
  • No strike actions
  • Nationwide study centers

While NOUN degrees are valid and recognized, note that some professional bodies (like the Nigerian Law School or Medical Council) may not accept them for professional training.

7. Explore Vocational and Technical Education

If you are open to alternatives outside the traditional university path, vocational training centers and technical colleges offer valuable skills and certification. These can lead to entrepreneurship or employment in industries like:

  • ICT
  • Welding and fabrication
  • Fashion design
  • Electrical installations
  • Catering and hotel management

Many of these programmes do not require JAMB, and you can always return to academics later with new qualifications or work experience.

8. Consider Foreign or Online Universities

Some accredited foreign and online universities offer affordable programmes without requiring JAMB. Countries like Ghana, Benin Republic, and even online institutions in the U.S. and U.K. have flexible admission policies.

However, ensure that:

  • The school is accredited
  • Your course is NUC-approved (if studying abroad but returning to Nigeria)
  • You verify total costs (tuition, visa, living expenses)

9. Wait and Re-Sit JAMB

This may not be your preferred option, but it’s worth considering. If you’re determined to study a particular course at a specific university, you can take time to prepare better and retake JAMB next year.

Use the extra time to:

  • Enroll in a quality JAMB coaching center
  • Focus on understanding rather than cramming
  • Use JAMB past questions and CBT practice apps

Final Tips for Candidates with Low JAMB Scores

  • Don’t waste time. Start exploring your alternatives immediately.
  • Consult your parents/guardians before choosing private institutions or fee-paying programmes.
  • Avoid scams. Only deal with official school portals or verified agents.
  • Stay positive and focused. One low score doesn’t define your future.

My Conclusion

Scoring low in JAMB doesn’t mean you can’t gain admission into a university in Nigeria. With smart choices and determination, you can still start your academic journey this year. Whether it’s through private universities, state polytechnics, pre-degree or A-level programmes, vocational training, or even online learning, there are many doors open to you.

Keep your dreams alive. Take action today, and you’ll find the right path that fits your goals and situation. 2025 might just be your year after all.
