The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has announced that it will commence a two-week warning strike starting tomorrow, following the expiration of the ultimatum it gave to the Federal Government to meet its outstanding demands.
The union had earlier issued a two-week deadline for the government to address lingering issues affecting the welfare of university lecturers and the state of public universities across the country. These include unresolved salary arrears, the implementation of the renegotiated 2009 agreement, revitalization funds for universities, and the payment system dispute involving IPPIS and UTAS.
According to reports, ASUU leadership decided to embark on the strike after several meetings with government representatives ended without any concrete resolution. The union described the decision as a difficult but necessary step to push the government toward fulfilling its promises to the education sector.
Students across various universities have expressed concern over the development, fearing another disruption to the academic calendar. Some have pleaded with both ASUU and the government to resolve their differences amicably to avoid a repeat of the prolonged strike that crippled academic activities in 2022.
The Federal Government has yet to release an official statement in response to the new strike notice, but insiders say negotiations may resume in the coming days.
As it stands, unless there’s a last-minute intervention, academic activities in public universities across Nigeria are set to be grounded once again from tomorrow.
