The Federal Government has introduced new Higher National Diploma (HND) programmes in Artificial Intelligence (AI), Cybersecurity, Software Engineering, and Networking. This initiative aims to modernize Nigeria’s technical education system and equip students with the necessary skills for the digital economy.
Modernizing Technical Education
Prof. Idris Bugaje, Executive Secretary of the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE), announced that traditional HND programmes have been restructured into more specialized skill areas. Under the Nigeria Skills Qualification Framework (NSQF), students will now receive targeted training in fields such as AI, cybersecurity, and networking.
Digital Accreditation Platform
In addition to curriculum updates, the NBTE has implemented a digital accreditation platform powered by artificial intelligence. This system is designed to uphold academic standards and detect irregularities, such as faculty members listed across multiple institutions. Institutions are now required to submit detailed information about their infrastructure, faculty qualifications, and equipment through a centralized digital portal, reducing the need for manual inspections and minimizing opportunities for malpractice.
Ensuring Quality and Integrity
For institutions in areas with limited internet connectivity, the NBTE will utilize accredited third-party vendors to conduct assessments and submit reports. These reforms, guided by the Minimum National Academic Standards (MNAS), establish benchmarks for the quality of technical education, including faculty expertise, facilities, and resources.
Prof. Bugaje emphasized the importance of integrating technology into education to enhance Nigeria’s competitiveness in the global economy.
Looking Ahead
By adopting strategies similar to those in Southeast Asia, where tech-focused education reforms have contributed to economic growth, Nigeria aims to revitalize its polytechnic system and strengthen its workforce to meet the demands of digitalization.
