Google has unveiled a new educational initiative granting university students in select African countries free access to its premium AI tools powered by Gemini 2.5 Pro for one year. The program, which runs from October 7 to December 9, 2025, is open to students in Nigeria, Kenya, Ghana, Rwanda, South Africa, and Zimbabwe.

Eligible students can enjoy advanced research and productivity features such as AI-powered summarization of academic papers, report generation from web resources, code debugging assistance, and seamless workflow integration. Additional tools provided include NotebookLM for organizing notes, Veo3 for turning text or images into presentations, and 2 TB of integrated cloud storage across Google services like Drive, Gmail, and Photos.

To benefit, students must VERIFY THEIR STATUS by uploading a valid school ID, class schedule, and tuition receipt. Verification is handled via the SheerID platform, which typically processes submissions in minutes. Enrollment requires adding a payment method, though no charges will apply during the free period.

Alex Okosi, Google’s Managing Director for Sub-Saharan Africa, described the move as part of the company’s effort to “democratize access to technology” and empower African students to compete globally. He noted that the platform’s premium plan is usually priced at ₦28,500 (about $19.39) per month, a cost that many students would find prohibitive without this offer.

Google’s campaign builds on its existing investment across Africa, including its Google for Startups Accelerator, which has supported over 140 startups in 17 countries, and digital skills training programs that have reached millions of learners across the continent.
