The National Examinations Council (NECO) has officially released the results of the 2026 Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE), bringing an end to the anxious wait for thousands of Junior Secondary School (JSS3) students across Nigeria.

The examination, which serves as the final assessment for students completing their basic education, is a key requirement for admission into Senior Secondary School (SSS1). The release of the results marks another significant milestone in Nigeria’s education calendar as schools begin preparations for the next academic stage.

According to the post NECO made in its official handle on X,  it states that about 186,291 candidates sat for the 2026 BECE, which was conducted in 12 subjects. The examination took place between April 20 and April 30, 2026, with candidates participating from the 36 states of the federation, the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), and several overseas centres.

The results were approved after the conclusion of the BECE Award Committee meeting held at NECO’s headquarters in Minna, Niger State. The meeting brought together officials of the examination body, representatives of the Federal Ministry of Education and other key stakeholders responsible for reviewing and approving the outcome of the examination.

The BECE remains one of the most important examinations in Nigeria’s basic education system. It assesses students’ academic readiness for senior secondary education and serves as a benchmark for schools when placing students into various academic programmes.

With the release of the results, students and parents can now evaluate academic performance and begin making informed decisions ahead of the transition to Senior Secondary School. Schools are also expected to commence admission and placement processes based on the newly released results.

Candidates can check their results through NECO’s official result-checking portal using their examination details and a valid result-checking token. Schools will also receive candidates’ results through the council’s approved channels.

Education stakeholders have described the timely release of the results as a positive development, noting that it allows schools to proceed with admissions and academic planning without unnecessary delays.

The release also highlights NECO’s continued role in administering credible national examinations and supporting the smooth progression of students through Nigeria’s education system.

As candidates access their results, they are encouraged to review their performance carefully and consult their schools where necessary for guidance on the next stage of their academic journey. For many students, the release of the 2026 BECE results represents not just the end of junior secondary education but also the beginning of a new chapter in senior secondary school.
