The National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) has unveiled NINAuth, a new mobile app designed to help Nigerians take full control of their National Identification Number (NIN) and the personal data linked to it.

With the NINAuth app, users can instantly verify their NIN, approve who gets access to their personal information, and generate secure “share codes” or QR codes when they need to provide identity data. The commission says the goal is to put citizens, rather than organisations, in charge of how their identity is used.

According to NIMC, the app offers four main benefits:

  • Instant NIN Verification: Users can quickly confirm their identity data without visiting a physical NIMC office.
  • Data Access Control: The app allows you to decide who can view your information and for how long.
  • Wide Availability: NINAuth is available for free download on both the Google Play Store (for Android) and the Apple App Store (for iPhones).
  • Full Privacy: All verifications and data-sharing take place within the app, giving users total control over their digital identity.

The commission is encouraging all NIN holders to download the app to enjoy greater convenience and privacy. “Because privacy equals power,” the flyer promoting the app reads, underscoring the agency’s push for stronger data protection practices.

NIMC says the NINAuth app also fits into Nigeria’s broader digital identity and e-governance strategy, which seeks to reduce the need for physical ID cards and paper-based verification. By using the app, Nigerians can verify their NIN or share identity data securely with banks, telecom providers, or government agencies when required.

The app can be downloaded by searching for “NINAuth” on the Google Play Store or Apple App Store. Once installed, users can sign in with their NIN and start managing their identity data immediately.

With NINAuth, NIMC hopes to make identity verification faster, safer and easier, while giving Nigerians a new level of control over their personal information.
