The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has reaffirmed its commitment to building a stronger working relationship with the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), describing the student body as a key stakeholder in advancing youth development and improving engagement with corps members.
The Director-General of the NYSC, Brig. Gen. Olakunle Nafiu, made the commitment while receiving members of the National Executive Council of NANS during a courtesy visit to the Scheme’s National Directorate Headquarters in Abuja.
According to Nafiu, closer collaboration between both organizations will strengthen communication with Nigerian students and support initiatives that prepare graduates for national service and life beyond the university.
The NYSC Director-General said the partnership is necessary because the majority of students represented by NANS will eventually participate in the national service programme.
He noted that maintaining a strong relationship with the association would enable the Scheme to engage prospective corps members more effectively while promoting its core values of patriotism, unity and national development.
“Every undergraduate is a prospective corps member. Strengthening our relationship with NANS will help us engage students early and ensure they are well informed about the objectives and programmes of the NYSC,” Nafiu said.
He added that the Scheme remains open to partnerships that promote national integration and create opportunities for young Nigerians to contribute meaningfully to the country’s development.
The proposed collaboration is expected to improve information sharing between the NYSC and students in tertiary institutions across the country.
Officials believe stronger engagement with NANS will help prospective corps members gain timely access to verified information on mobilization, orientation camp requirements, documentation and other official procedures, reducing reliance on misinformation circulating on social media.
The partnership is also expected to provide a platform for addressing concerns affecting students before they graduate and begin the mobilization process.
Responding on behalf of the delegation, the President of the National Association of Nigerian Students reaffirmed the association’s readiness to work closely with the NYSC in promoting programmes that benefit Nigerian students and graduates.
The student body commended the Scheme’s contributions to national unity and youth development, expressing confidence that closer cooperation would create more opportunities for students to participate in leadership, entrepreneurship and community development initiatives.
NANS also pledged to support awareness campaigns that encourage students to comply with NYSC guidelines and participate actively in programmes designed to prepare them for national service.
The renewed partnership comes at a time when the Federal Government is implementing wide-ranging reforms aimed at repositioning the NYSC as a more skills-driven and youth-focused institution.
Recent reforms approved by the Federal Executive Council include plans to strengthen entrepreneurship training, introduce technology-driven mobilization processes and align corps members’ primary assignments more closely with their academic qualifications and professional skills.
The NYSC said collaboration with critical stakeholders such as NANS will play an important role in ensuring the successful implementation of these reforms.
As discussions between both organizations continue, stakeholders expect the partnership to strengthen communication between students and the NYSC while supporting initiatives that empower young Nigerians.
With millions of undergraduates expected to transition into national service in the coming years, both the NYSC and NANS say sustained collaboration will help ensure graduates are better informed, better prepared and better equipped to contribute to national development.
