The Federal Government has launched a new training programme aimed at equipping 5,000 Nigerian youths with skills and certification in electricity meter installation and technical services.
The Minister of Youth Development announced the initiative in a post on his official X account, describing it as another pathway for young Nigerians to gain employable skills while contributing to efforts to address the country’s metering gap.
According to the minister, the programme is designed to train and certify participants as meter installers and technicians, creating a pool of skilled workers capable of supporting efficiency in Nigeria’s energy sector.
The initiative is part of the government’s broader youth empowerment efforts, which the minister said are focused on creating opportunities for young Nigerians across different sectors of the economy.

The minister’s latest announcement came a day after the government expanded its YouthCred programme to provide affordable credit to an additional one million economically active young Nigerians.
The expansion is intended to give young people greater access to finance to support education, establish businesses and pursue economic opportunities.
“Through YouthCred, we are not just providing access to credit; we are unlocking enterprise, strengthening livelihoods and building a generation of financially empowered young Nigerians ready to drive national prosperity,” the minister said in the earlier announcement.
Beyond access to credit, the government has also highlighted other youth-focused initiatives targeting skills development, entrepreneurship and agriculture.
The Nigerian Youth Academy, known as NiYA, provides young people with access to digital and employability skills, while its StartUp component offers funding and mentorship to selected young entrepreneurs to help them develop their business ideas.

In agriculture, the Youth in AgriBusiness Land Trust Fund is intended to expand young people’s access to land and support them in developing viable agribusinesses.
The minister said the latest metering initiative represents another effort to create employment pathways for young Nigerians, particularly in the energy sector.
He encouraged young people to take advantage of the programme and other government initiatives by registering, completing the required training and obtaining certification to improve their prospects for employment.
The minister’s announcements come amid ongoing government efforts to address youth unemployment and expand access to skills, financing and entrepreneurship opportunities.
He said the impact of youth empowerment should be measured by the opportunities created, businesses supported, jobs enabled and lives transformed, rather than by promises alone.
The government is positioning the various initiatives as part of a broader strategy to equip Nigerian youths with the skills, financial support and opportunities needed to participate more actively in the country’s economic development.
