The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has announced that the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) has resumed the payment of monthly upkeep allowances to eligible student beneficiaries after days of uncertainty over the disbursement process.

The update was shared on Thursday 16th July, by the National President of NANS through his official X (formerly Twitter) account, where he assured students that the payment process is back on track and would continue until every verified beneficiary receives their allowance.

In his post, the NANS President dismissed reports suggesting that the upkeep programme had been suspended, stating that he would not mislead Nigerian students with unverified information.

“It is official, NELFUND upkeep payments have resumed. I have a name to protect than to update you all on what’s not real. The payment will continue until everyone is paid,” he wrote.

Following the announcement, several students across different tertiary institutions took to social media to confirm receiving their upkeep alerts. Many beneficiaries expressed relief after waiting for weeks, while others encouraged fellow students to remain patient as payments continue to reach eligible accounts.

Following his announcement, one student sought clarification in the comment section, questioning why only the May upkeep allowance was being credited despite the assurance that all outstanding payments would be made.

The student wrote:

“Respectfully sir, you mentioned that all outstanding payments will be paid all together. But here, only the month of May is being disbursed. Why?”

Responding to the concern, the NANS National President explained that the upkeep allowance is a monthly payment programme. According to him, beneficiaries can only receive ₦20,000 at a time, representing one month’s upkeep, while the remaining outstanding months will be paid subsequently as the disbursement continues.

The exchange provided further clarity for students who were expecting multiple months’ allowances to be credited in a single payment, indicating that the disbursement is being processed on a month-by-month basis rather than as a lump-sum payment.

The latest development comes after concerns were raised over delays in the monthly upkeep disbursement, prompting anxiety among students who rely on the allowance to cover transportation, feeding and other day-to-day academic expenses.

Although the payment process appears to have resumed, students who are yet to receive their allowances have been advised to remain calm, as the disbursement is expected to continue in batches until all verified beneficiaries are paid.

The resumption of upkeep payments is expected to bring relief to thousands of students participating in the NELFUND programme, which was established by the Federal Government to improve access to higher education through interest-free student loans and monthly support for eligible applicants.

As of the time of filing this report, NELFUND had not issued a fresh public statement specifically announcing the resumption. However, the confirmation by the NANS President, coupled with payment confirmations from multiple student beneficiaries, suggests that the disbursement process has resumed.

Students are encouraged to monitor their registered bank accounts and official communication channels for further updates regarding subsequent payments.
