Slow MTN internet at home is rarely one problem. It’s usually one of about four, and they need completely different fixes. Work through this in order and you’ll know which one you have within a few minutes.
First, Find Out Whose Fault It Is
Before changing any settings, do these three things. They take two minutes and they save you from fixing the wrong thing.
- Run a speed test. Use the Ookla Speedtest app and write the number down. You need a baseline, otherwise you’re guessing.
- Test on mobile data directly. Turn WiFi off on your phone and use MTN data on the phone itself. Fast on the phone but slow on WiFi means your router is the problem, not MTN.
- Check Downdetector. If reports have spiked in the last hour, it’s an MTN outage. Nothing you do at home will fix it.
That single WiFi-versus-mobile-data comparison tells you more than any other test, and most people never run it.
1. Check Whether You’ve Been Throttled
Dial *323# to see your data balance. That’s the standard code across all Nigerian networks now, so it works on any SIM you have.
The thing to understand here is that running out of data isn’t the only way your speed drops. Most “unlimited” home plans carry a fair usage policy, which means once you pass a certain volume in the month, MTN slows you down heavily for the rest of the cycle. Your data doesn’t finish, it just crawls.
If your connection was fine for two weeks and then suddenly became unusable without anything changing at home, this is almost always why. Check the fair usage terms on your specific plan in the MyMTN app. Nothing you do to your router will fix a throttled line.
2. Work Out If It’s Just the Time of Day
MTN’s network gets heavily loaded between roughly 6pm and 11pm, when everyone is home and streaming at once. In dense areas this is dramatic, and it isn’t a fault, it’s congestion.
Run your speed test at 7pm, then again at 7am. If the morning number is several times higher, you’ve found your answer. Shift big downloads, system updates and backups to early morning, and consider a night plan if most of your heavy usage can move.
3. Move Your Router
If mobile data on your phone is fast but WiFi is slow, this is where to start, and placement matters more than people expect.
- Put it out in the open, not inside a cabinet or behind the TV.
- Get it up high. Signal spreads downward and outward, not through the floor.
- Keep it away from microwaves, cordless phones, and thick concrete walls.
- For a router with a SIM inside, position matters twice over, because it needs a good mobile signal as well as good WiFi reach. Near a window facing the nearest mast is usually best.
If your house is large or has thick walls, one router genuinely may not be enough. A mesh system or a second access point solves dead zones properly, whereas moving a single router around just shifts the dead zone somewhere else.
4. Connect to the 5GHz Band
This one is missed constantly and it’s free.
Most modern routers broadcast two networks, usually named something like MTN-XXXX and MTN-XXXX-5G. The 2.4GHz band reaches further but is slower and far more congested, since every neighbour’s router and every Bluetooth device crowds into it. The 5GHz band is much faster over shorter distances.
If your phone or laptop has quietly connected to the 2.4GHz network and you’re sitting in the same room as the router, you’re leaving a lot of speed on the table. Switch to the 5GHz one. Note that this has nothing to do with 5G mobile networks despite the name.
5. Check Your Actual Signal Strength
The bars on your screen are close to meaningless. The real number lives in your settings.
On Android, go to Settings, About Phone, Status or SIM Status and look for signal strength in dBm. Roughly speaking, anything better than -85 dBm is good, -85 to -100 dBm is workable, and worse than -100 dBm means you’ll struggle no matter what else you change.
Walk around the house watching that number. It moves more than you’d think, and the best spot is often not where the router currently sits. If the whole house reads poorly, an external antenna on your router is the fix that actually works, rather than a “signal booster” app, which does nothing at all.
6. Confirm Your APN, But Don’t Get Creative With It
The official MTN Nigeria APN, published by MTN itself, is:
- Name: MTN Internet
- APN: web.gprs.mtnnigeria.net
- Username and Password: leave blank, or use web for both if your phone insists
- MCC: 621, MNC: 30
- Everything else: leave blank
You’ll find this under Settings, then Mobile Network, then Access Point Names. Restart the phone after saving.
Now the part worth being honest about. A wrong APN stops your data connecting properly or makes it unstable. It does not cap your speed, and fixing it will not make a working connection faster. If your data connects fine, your APN is fine, so leave it alone.
You’ll also find sites pushing custom APN strings that supposedly unlock faster speeds or free browsing. Those configurations are unsupported, they break as soon as MTN changes anything, and the ones marketed for “free browsing” are attempts to use the network without paying. We’re not publishing them. Stick with the official APN.
7. Find Out What’s Eating Your Bandwidth
Log into your router’s admin page, usually 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.8.1 in a browser, and look at the connected devices list.
Two things to look for. First, devices you don’t recognise, which means someone else is on your WiFi. Change the password if so. Second, the count itself. Ten devices on a home mobile broadband connection will make everything feel slow, especially if a couple are streaming or updating in the background.
Automatic app and system updates are the usual hidden culprit. Set them to WiFi-only and to run overnight, and disconnect anything that doesn’t need to be online.
If your router has QoS settings, use them to prioritise whatever actually matters to you, like video calls or gaming, over background traffic.
8. Use a Cable Where You Can
For anything stationary, a desktop, a smart TV, a work laptop, an Ethernet cable removes WiFi from the equation entirely. It’s the cheapest reliable upgrade available and it frees up wireless capacity for everything else.
9. Restart Properly, Not Just Quickly
Unplug the router for a full 60 seconds rather than tapping the power button. That clears the capacitors and forces a genuine reconnection to the network.
On your phone, toggling airplane mode on and off forces it to reattach to the mast, which sometimes moves you off a congested tower. If problems persist across every app and every network setting you’ve touched, a network settings reset is worth doing, though it clears saved WiFi passwords, so have those to hand.
10. Escalate If It’s Genuinely MTN
If you’ve worked through everything above and speeds are still poor at all hours, the problem is on their side.
- Dial 300 from your MTN line, or use the MyMTN app. Ask specifically for a network refresh on your line and for the mast serving your area to be checked. Get a complaint reference number before you hang up.
- Give them a few working days.
- Still nothing? Escalate to the NCC Consumer Portal. Operators are required to resolve complaints, and a regulator complaint with a reference number attached moves considerably faster than a fourth call to customer care.
A Note on VPNs
You’ll see VPNs recommended as a way to “bypass throttling.” Be sceptical.
A VPN routes your traffic through an extra server, which almost always makes things slower, not faster. It can’t create bandwidth that isn’t there, and it does nothing about tower congestion or a fair usage cap. It genuinely helps in one narrow case: if a specific service is being slowed while everything else is fine. If everything is slow, a VPN will make it worse, and free VPNs especially so.
When It’s Time to Stop Troubleshooting
Sometimes the honest answer is that mobile broadband can’t do what you need at your address.

It’s also worth checking whether 5G has reached your area, since a 5G router in a covered zone is a different experience entirely. Coverage is still thin, so check your exact address rather than assuming.
