JAMB Warns Against Admission Outside CAPS: How to Verify Your Offer Before You Accept

JAMB says an admission outside CAPS may not be recognised as valid. Here's how to verify your offer on CAPS before you accept, and the deadlines schools face.

JAMB has warned candidates not to accept any admission outside CAPS, saying an offer that hasn’t gone through its Central Admissions Processing System “may not be recognised as valid”. The board posted the warning on its official X account on Monday, October 12, less than three weeks before public universities are due to conclude their 2026/2027 admissions on October 31.

Being offered admission is exciting, but before you accept, make sure it is properly recognised through JAMB's Central Admissions Processing System (CAPS).

The board added that “accepting such an offer could put your academic journey at risk”, and told candidates not to rely only on what an institution tells them. Its message closed with a simple instruction, “Verify before you accept”, and JAMB also released an episode of its JAMB Explained series covering what makes an admission illegal and how candidates can protect themselves.

Why an admission outside CAPS can come back to haunt you

Every legitimate admission into a Nigerian university, polytechnic or college of education has to be approved on CAPS, because that’s the record JAMB issues your admission letter from. A school can put your name on a departmental list, collect an acceptance fee and even let you attend lectures, but if the offer never appears on your CAPS dashboard, JAMB has no record that you were admitted.

That gap usually stays hidden until it matters most. Students admitted irregularly have run into trouble at final-year clearance, when mobilising for NYSC, and when applying for further study, because the institution’s records and JAMB’s records don’t agree. Fixing it later is slow, uncertain and, for some older admissions, attracts a penalty fee, which is why JAMB wants you to check before you commit money and time.

How to check that your admission is on CAPS before you pay anything

The check takes a few minutes. Log in to the JAMB e-Facility portal with the email address and password you used during UTME registration, then follow these steps.

Verify an admission offer on CAPS
  1. Log inJAMB e-Facility portal > LoginUse the email and password from your UTME registration.
  2. Open CAPSCheck Admission Status > Access my CAPSThis opens your Central Admissions Processing System dashboard.
  3. Read the admission statusAdmission StatusConfirm the institution, course and year match what the school told you.
  4. Accept only what you seeAccept Admission or Reject AdmissionIf the offer isn't showing, don't accept or pay until the school explains why.

If the school has told you you’re admitted but CAPS shows “Admission in Progress” or nothing at all, don’t assume the worst straight away. Schools often send lists in batches, so contact the admissions office and ask whether your name has been forwarded to JAMB. What you shouldn’t do is pay an acceptance fee or school fees on the strength of a list that hasn’t reached CAPS, especially if the offer came through an agent or a “special” route that skips the normal process.

Also make sure your O’level result is on your JAMB profile, because a school can’t approve your admission on CAPS without it. If you sat this year’s NECO, our guide on how to check your NECO 2026 result covers the first step.

The October 31 deadline makes this warning urgent for university candidates

JAMB set the current admission deadlines after CAPS came back online in late September, and they’re the dates your institution is working towards. Offers can keep appearing on CAPS right up to each deadline, so log in every few days rather than checking once and giving up.

Admission deadlines to watch
  1. Public universities conclude 2026 admissions
  2. Private universities conclude 2026 admissions
  3. Accept or reject outstanding 2021 to 2025 offersUnanswered offers revert to Not Admitted
  4. Other tertiary institutions conclude 2026 admissions

Institution deadlines from JAMB's CAPS update of 28 September 2026. The old-offer deadline was announced on 30 September 2026.

Our earlier report on the restored CAPS and the 2026 admission deadlines explains how those dates were set. If you still have an unresolved offer from a previous year, the separate November 30 deadline for 2021 to 2025 offers applies, and you can reject an old offer without affecting a new 2026 admission.

What to do this week if you’ve just been offered a place

Treat the CAPS dashboard as the final word. If your offer is there and the course and institution are right, accept it promptly and then follow your school’s registration steps. If it isn’t there, get an explanation from the admissions office in writing before you pay, and keep checking until the deadline for your type of institution passes.

Once your admission is confirmed on CAPS, it’s worth sorting out funding early too. The NELFUND 2026/2027 application window is open until December 31, and a properly recorded admission is part of what the student loan process checks.
