The LASU strike widened into a total shutdown this weekend after the non-teaching unions joined academic staff at Lagos State’s four state-owned universities. A Joint Action Committee of ASUU, SSANU, NASU and NAAT began an indefinite strike at midnight going into Saturday, October 3, 2026, covering Lagos State University (LASU), the Lagos State University College of Medicine (LASUCOM), Lagos State University of Science and Technology (LASUSTECH) and Lagos State University of Education (LASUED).

Lecturers at LASU, LASUSTECH and LASUED have been out since September 15, but non-teaching staff stayed at work and kept some offices running until now. With all four unions now out, the committee says teaching, examinations and administrative work are all on hold until the Lagos State Government meets its demands.

Lagos state universities strike: the dates that matter
  1. ASUU strike begins at LASU, LASUSTECH and LASUED
  2. ASUU, SSANU, NASU and NAAT begin joint indefinite strikeLASUCOM now included
  3. JAMB deadline for public universities to conclude 2026/2027 admissions
  4. Strike called offNot confirmedDepends on talks with the state government

No resumption date has been announced by the unions or the universities.

What pushed SSANU, NASU and NAAT to join the LASU strike

The joint committee gave the state government a seven-day ultimatum, and the strike started once it expired without a deal. Committee chairman Prof. Ibrahim Bakare said the unions “have exhausted every possible administrative channel to avert this crisis”. The demands cover staff across all four institutions, not just lecturers:

  • full implementation of the 2025 agreement between the Federal Government and the university unions
  • a one-off payment of nine months of arrears, covering January to September 2026
  • keeping the negotiated allowances non-taxable
  • a 15% “Lagos Factor” allowance to cushion the cost of living in the state
  • the 20% salary increase promised in 2023
  • five Marcopolo buses for staff transport

The first two points are where most of the money sits, and they’re the same issues ASUU has been pressing since it first shut LASU, LASUED and LASUSTECH in September. The Lagos State Government hadn’t publicly responded to the joint committee’s demands at the time of writing.

Why freshers should watch JAMB’s October 31 deadline closely

JAMB has told public universities to conclude their 2026/2027 admissions by October 31, with private universities following on November 30 and other institutions by December 31. Admission lists, screening and clearance rely heavily on registry and admissions staff, many of whom belong to SSANU and NASU, so a long shutdown could slow LASU, LASUSTECH and LASUED’s processing just as that deadline approaches. Neither JAMB nor the universities have said whether the strike will affect their timelines.

The JAMB side of your admission doesn’t depend on anyone at your school. If an offer shows on CAPS, log in to the JAMB e-Facility portal and accept it, then print your admission letter, because those steps work regardless of the strike. Our explainer on the 2026 CAPS admission deadlines explains how each deadline works, and if you still have an unresolved offer from an earlier year, the November 30 extension for 2021 to 2025 offers applies to you.

What the full shutdown means for students already in school

Don’t travel to campus for clearance, transcripts or fee issues until your school announces that offices have reopened, because the administrative staff who handle those requests are now on strike too. Keep an eye on the LASU website and the verified pages of LASUCOM, LASUSTECH and LASUED for any resumption notice or revised calendar, and be careful with dates that circulate on WhatsApp without an official notice attached.

If you’re relying on a student loan, your NELFUND application runs on its own portal and timeline, which we covered in our guide to the 2026/2027 NELFUND application window. Striking workers at AAUA in Ondo State suspended their own strike and returned on September 29, which shows these disputes can move quickly once talks begin, and in Lagos the next step now rests with the Sanwo-Olu administration meeting the joint committee.
