The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has escalated concerns raised by students of the University of Uyo (UNIUYO) over alleged delays in the payment of their NELFUND upkeep allowances.
NANS National President, Comrade Akinteye Babatunde Afeez, disclosed this in a statement posted on the association’s official X account after students raised concerns about their unpaid allowances.
The development followed an earlier statement by Afeez announcing that the payment of June and July NELFUND upkeep allowances had commenced, with outstanding backlogs expected to be cleared.

In the comment section of the post, a student who identified as being from the University of Uyo appealed to the NANS president and the Nigeria Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) to investigate the situation affecting students of the institution.
The student claimed that UNIUYO students had not received their upkeep allowances and urged NANS and NELFUND to ensure that the university’s beneficiaries were included in the ongoing payment batches.
Responding to the concerns, Afeez said he had formally escalated the matter to the leadership of NELFUND for urgent attention.
“I want to assure all affected UNIUYO students that the issues surrounding their upkeep, which they claim has not been paid since January, are receiving the necessary attention,” Afeez said.

He added that he had been assured that efforts were underway to resolve the issue as quickly as possible.
The NANS president urged affected students to remain calm and hopeful while the process was being concluded, assuring them that the association would continue engaging relevant stakeholders until the concerns were addressed.
Afeez also reaffirmed NANS’ commitment to protecting the welfare and interests of Nigerian students, saying the association would not relent in ensuring that eligible beneficiaries receive their entitlements.
The development comes as NELFUND continues the disbursement of student upkeep allowances, with NANS previously informing beneficiaries that payments were being processed in batches.
The latest intervention by NANS highlights concerns among some students over the timing of upkeep payments, as the association continues to engage NELFUND on outstanding issues affecting beneficiaries.
