NECO GCE, the 2026 SSCE External, begins on Wednesday, November 4, and runs until Saturday, November 21, according to the timetable the National Examinations Council has published on its website. The same document carries six rules for candidates, and two of them decide whether your first morning goes smoothly, because NECO says it is “mandatory that each candidate has a photocard for identification” and that candidates must be seated 30 minutes before every paper starts.

Late registration closes on Tuesday, November 3, which leaves anyone registering at the last minute only hours to print a photocard before the first paper. Most papers on the timetable open at 10am, so the 30-minute rule puts you in your seat by 9:30am, and getting to an unfamiliar centre in time means checking the address on your photocard today rather than on Wednesday morning.

The clock on your question paper outranks the printed timetable

One NECO rule catches candidates who plan only from the timetable they printed. NECO says that where the time on the virtual question paper is different from the time on the timetable, the time on the question paper is the one candidates must follow. Treat every start and finish time you’ve written down as a guide, and keep your eye on the paper in front of you once the examination begins.

WHERE THE TIME ON THE VIRTUAL QUESTION PAPER DIFFERS FROM THE TIME ON THIS TIMETABLE, THE TIME ON THE VIRTUAL QUESTION PAPER SHOULD BE STRICTLY ADHERED TO.

NECO’s timetable lists each paper’s duration, and a few days are long. Physics Paper I, the alternative to practical, runs for 2 hours 45 minutes from 2pm, and General Mathematics pairs a 1 hour 45 minute objective paper from 10am with a 2 hour 30 minute essay paper from noon. English Language adds a 45-minute Test of Orals at 1:15pm after its essay paper. NECO’s guideline says each candidate receives the timetable at registration, so use yours to see which date each of your subjects falls on.

Your calculator can come in, but your smartwatch can’t

NECO allows scientific calculators in the hall, but it bans electronic communication gadgets, and its list names programmable calculators, mobile phones, iPads, tablets and smart wristwatches, glasses and pens. A programmable calculator therefore counts as a banned gadget even though an ordinary scientific one is fine. If you’re buying a calculator this week, our sister site’s guide on checking whether a Casio calculator is genuine walks through Casio’s QR test.

What NECO's timetable says about the hall

Bring

  • Your NECO photocardNECO says each candidate must have one for identification.
  • A scientific calculatorNECO says the use of a scientific calculator is allowed.

Leave at home

  • Programmable calculatorsListed by NECO among prohibited electronic gadgets.
  • Mobile phones, iPads and tabletsStrictly prohibited in the examination hall.
  • Smart wristwatches, glasses and pensStrictly prohibited in the examination hall.

NECO also says candidates with albinism and blind candidates get 30 minutes of extra time on every paper. If that applies to you, confirm with your centre before Wednesday that the supervisors have it noted, so the extra time is in place from the first paper rather than sorted out in the hall.

Two days left to settle your registration and photocard

Anyone who hasn’t registered yet still has until Tuesday, November 3, with the ₦5,000 late fee we explained in our guide to NECO GCE late registration. Registration and photocard printing both happen on NECO’s external candidates’ portal, ssceexternal.neco.gov.ng, and the photocard is also where your examination centre appears.

Print your photocard today, check the centre address on it, put your scientific calculator and pens in one bag with it, and leave your phone and smartwatch at home on Wednesday. With those sorted, the only thing left for the morning of November 4 is reaching your seat by 9:30am for a 10am paper. Students already thinking past this sitting can read about the proposed 2027 exam timetable.
