The West African Examinations Council has appointed Suleiman Danlami Kum as the new WAEC Head of Nigeria National Office, filling the post left open when Dr Amos Josiah Dangut moved up to become the Council’s Registrar on October 1, 2026. The appointment was announced on Sunday by the Council’s spokesperson, Moyosola Adesina, and makes Kum the official Nigerian schools and candidates will deal with most directly on WASSCE conduct, result releases and complaints.

An exam security specialist takes over WAEC’s Nigeria office
Kum has spent his whole 28-year career inside the Council. He joined in July 1998 after three years teaching at Baptist High School, Jos, and has since headed examinations security in the Awka, Yola and Makurdi offices, served as Branch Controller in Gusau and Kano, led the Security Printing Department, worked as Zonal Coordinator in Port Harcourt and Ikeja, and served as Director of Administration before moving into senior roles in test administration.
WAEC credits him with introducing variable data printing and other security features on examination materials, facial-recognition biometric devices for taking attendance at exam centres, and the delivery of computer-based achievement testing. He holds a Bachelor of Agriculture in Animal Production from the University of Agriculture, Makurdi (1992) and a Postgraduate Diploma in Education from the National Open University of Nigeria (2025), where he is now studying for a Master of Education in Educational Administration and Planning.
Why this WAEC Head of Nigeria National Office appointment matters to candidates
The Head of National Office runs WAEC’s operations in Nigeria, which is by far the Council’s largest member country by candidate numbers. It’s the office that conducts the WASSCE for school and private candidates here, releases the results and handles cases of withheld results. When we reported on Dangut’s appointment as WAEC Registrar, his replacement in Nigeria was the open question, and Sunday’s announcement answers it.
Kum’s background in exam security, security printing and biometric verification lines up closely with the measures that shaped the 2026 WASSCE, including computer-based papers, serialised questions and tighter checks at centres. That points to continuity rather than a change of direction, although WAEC hasn’t announced any new policy under the new leadership.
What GCE candidates writing now should do
Nothing changes for anyone already registered. The WASSCE for private candidates, second series, continues on its published timetable, and our WAEC GCE timetable 2026 guide lists the remaining papers, including English Language on October 17. Result checking, verification and complaints still go through WAEC Nigeria’s official website, so keep your examination number and registration details safe until your result is out.
