The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has clarified that the 2025 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) will not be conducted over the internet. Instead, the examination will utilize a Local Area Network (LAN) to ensure a secure and efficient testing process.

JAMB Registrar, Professor Is-haq Oloyede, addressed this misconception during a recent meeting with the National Association of Proprietors of Private Schools (NAPPS) at the board’s headquarters in Bwari, Abuja. He emphasized that the UTME’s Computer-Based Test (CBT) does not rely on internet connectivity, thereby minimizing potential technical issues during the examination.

“The board uses Local Area Network (LAN), which is a computer network that interconnects computers within a limited area such as a residence, campus, or building, using its own network protocols and is locally managed,” Oloyede explained.

He further noted that data transmitted over the LAN are encrypted and safeguarded with additional security measures before being accessed on candidates’ computer terminals.

Oloyede also highlighted that, unlike examinations conducted by bodies such as the West African Examination Council (WAEC) and the National Examination Council (NECO), UTME registration is not a school-based exercise. This distinction underscores the importance of individual responsibility in the registration process.

In collaboration with the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC), JAMB requires all candidates to possess a National Identification Number (NIN) for UTME registration. Oloyede cautioned that any modifications to candidate data must be justified to maintain the integrity of the system. He advised candidates and stakeholders to utilize the “REQUERY” feature on JAMB’s portal to resolve discrepancies instead of attempting to alter historical records.

Regarding the examination schedule, the sale of UTME application forms commenced on January 31, 2025, and will conclude on March 8, 2025. The Mock-UTME is slated for April 5, 2025, while the main UTME will take place from April 25 to May 5, 2025. Candidates registering for the UTME with the mock exam are expected to pay ₦8,200, whereas those opting for the UTME only will pay ₦7,200.
