The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has appealed to the management of the University of Lagos (UNILAG) to reopen its school fees payment and course registration portal for 48 hours.
NANS made the appeal in a press statement dated July 31, 2026, and shared on its official X handle.
The students’ body expressed concern over the closure of the university’s payment and registration portal on June 21, noting that examinations are not scheduled to begin until August 10.
According to NANS, the early closure has created difficulties for students who were still making efforts to raise funds to pay their fees and complete their course registration.
The association said the situation was particularly concerning amid the current economic challenges facing families and students across the country. It also referenced the Federal Government’s student loan initiative through the Nigeria Education Loan Fund (NELFUND), which was introduced to improve access to higher education.
NANS argued that universities should consider the financial difficulties faced by students and allow sufficient time for those making genuine efforts to meet their financial obligations.
“Many students who were actively working to raise their fees have now been shut out entirely, placing their academic pursuits at serious risk through no fault of their own,” the association stated.
While acknowledging the authority of the university management to determine how its payment and registration portal is administered, NANS appealed to the institution to reconsider the decision in the interest of affected students.
The association specifically requested that UNILAG reopen the portal for at least 48 hours, giving students who have yet to complete their payments and course registration another opportunity to do so before the commencement of examinations.
“However sound justice may be in principle, it ought never to be devoid of mercy,” NANS said.
The association urged the university management to respond promptly and take what it described as a humane approach to the situation, warning that affected students could face serious academic consequences if they are unable to complete the required processes.
NANS reaffirmed its commitment to protecting the interests of Nigerian students and ensuring that students are not denied access to education because of circumstances beyond their control.
